Gone Girl reminded me of a story I once saw on a documentary about comic books. A writer said that every time an issue of Alan Moore’s Watchmen came out, all the writers he knew would go home and tear up their work for the month, knowing that in the face of Watchmen it was all awful.
Gone Girl makes me want to write a better book. It was funny, gripping, weird, insightful, confusing, twisty (oh, so very twisty) and, bar a few little points, kept me guessing all the way to the fantastic conclusion. Avoid spoilers and read it.
